3A Kiss Before Dying was Ira Levin's first nove
Par bernard
Ira Levin was born in New York City on August 27th, 1929. While he was a student at Drake University, then at New York University, he wrote plays for television. After university, Levin spent two years in the U.S. Army, where he wrote scripts for army training films. After he left the army, Levin began to write theater plays and also short stories. Many of his stories were published in well-known magazines. A Kiss Before Dying was Ira Levin's first novel. It was published in 1954 and it made him famous. The book won the Edgar Allen Рое Award. Since then, Levin has continued to write crime and horror stories. Two films have been made of A Kiss Before Dying (in 1956 and 1997), and several of Levin's other stories have been made into famous films too. These include Rosemary's Baby, The Stepford Wives, The Boys from Brazil and Sliverextrait:PART ONE: DOROTHYThe Room Near the CampusApril 1950 Night was coming to the town of Blue River, in the state of Iowa. It was nearly dark in the small room near the Stoddard University campus. The two people in the room that Sunday evening were both second-year students at the college. They were looking at each other in silence. The handsome young man was angry. His plans had been working so well. And now this news had come! But he wasn't going to show his anger — that wouldn't help him. He walked to the window, and for a few seconds, he looked out at the lights of the town. He looked at the yellow lights in the streets. He looked at the red light on top of the Municipal Building1, the tower which was the tallest building in Blue River, a mile or two away. Then he turned, and he smiled at the young woman sitting on the bed. "Are you sure that you're pregnant?" he asked her gently. "Are you really sure that you're going to have a baby?" "Yes, I'm sure," she replied. "The doctor told me that I'm two months pregnant." She started to cry. "What will we do? Can we get married soon?" "

4A great book!
Par M.O.
A unusual murderer story… In the 20. Century a serie of murders took place in …. Dorothy, a jung girl, who studied at the university of … felt in love with a mysterious and fitty boy. They had a secret love story, which soon became tragic. One day, Dorothy said to him that she was pregnant. Unfortunately her secret boyfriend did not plan that. Indeed he just wanted to be with Dorothy because she came from a very rich family. Dorothy did not want to abort. That why he murdered her and let the other people think that she commited sucide. Even if he murdered Dorothy, the mysterious boy still wanted to become rich. But the only way he had to earn money easily was to seduice Dorothy’s sisters. But Dorothy’s sister would not accept to be weak victims … They would fight to restore the truth.Between Fear and Suspens… In this book the narrator is omniscient : On the one hand, he knows what the murderer thinks and on the other hand, he is aware of what Dorothy’s sisters think. Nevertheless he creates a real suspens for the reader. He never reveals how the story will ending and just gives enough informations to make the reader anxious. Indeed we can never wonder what will happen, there is always something unexpected. As I began to read this book, I was convinced that « A kiss before dying » was a classical detective novel. But I quickly realize that this book was full of surprises ! I especially like this kind of books because the main characters live into an old fashion world. Indeed the story takes place in the 20 . Century. The autor alludes continuously to the 50s. That is why we imagine the murderer as a real gentelman and Dorothy and her sisters as real housewives of the 50s. Elen, Dorothy’s sister, symbolise here the free woman, who fight to restore her sister memory into a men’s world. When I read this book, I identify myself with the main characters, who are living in this old-fashion atmosphere. That was great !A Way to understand what a murderer think… Ira Lewin lets the reader know how a simple man could become a murderer. At the begining of this novel, the mysterious and fitty boy was a simple student. Nevertheless we learn quickly that he is an egoistic sociopath. Indeed he did not fell in love with Dorothy, he just wanted to be with her to earn money. In the book, the mysterious man did not have once a friend, he was always alone and just wanted to reach his aim. He commited a lot of inforgivable faults but never seemed to be eaten up with remorse. This novel allows us to realize how strange a killer’s mind could be. –A very disappointed book!-- I think that this book is a good one. I recommand you tp read it. I am a french student, and I really enjoy it. This book is a good way to learn English and a good way to feel the tension of a detective novel!M.O.

5Scary early masterpiece
Par Alfred J. Kwak
First published in 1953 by an author then aged 24, this book has all the ingredients for Stephen King. much later, to call him the Swiss watchmaker among thriller writers: perfect preparation then careful execution. For thriller writers this means increasing tension incrementally and adding shock moments, sudden twists and cliffhangers against a solid, believable background. This colorful thriller reads like a Hitchcock film script. Faultless and mature nail biter about a serial killer preying on young women, deftly plotted and with good to great dialogue and characterization. Levin went on to produce classics such as “The Boys from Brazil” and “Rosemary’s Baby”.
